Job Description

A large charter in Harlem is seeking a Director of Special Education to serve as the primary leader for all special services (e.g., special education, 504 plans, ELL, speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, etc.). They will work to ensure that all students who are underperforming and at-risk are identified and have the appropriate interventions and resources needed for them to succeed socially, emotionally, and academically.  The Director of Special Education reports to the Director of Student Support Services.

  • Direct and oversee special education/service curriculum development, delivery and
  • Ensure special education curriculum alignment with New York State Learning Standards
  • Manage the implementation of IEPs and the provision of direct services by approved New York City Department of Education related service providers
  • Monitor and audit the usage of the Child Assistance Program (CAP) system to ensure compliance standards
  • Actively identify and recruit staff in the areas of special education, English language learner instruction, and at-risk student services
  • Remain abreast of all special education/services related federal, state, and city compliance standards and regulations
  • Ensure that all general education teachers are aware of, understand, and implement all classroom accommodations and modifications required by IEPs, 504 plans, English language learners, and at-risk students
  • Observe, coach, and provide feedback to special education teachers, interventionists, specialists, English language learner instructors, and related services providers (e.g., occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, social workers, counselors, etc.)
  • Provide support for special education staff with school-based crisis cases (e.g., formal complaints to the state, legal matters, and complex cases involving the CSE)
  • Identify and oversee professional development activities and opportunities for special education/services staff

Qualification, Skill and Knowledge Requirements

  • Master’s degree with 5+ years’ experience in Special Education is required; must have at least 3 years’ experience in an administrative/leadership capacity
  • 2 – 5 years teaching experience in an urban school setting is desired
  • New York State certification for Special Education, grades K – 12
  • New York State Administration Certification (SAS/SBL) is preferred
  • Strong knowledge of federal, city, and state special education/services related compliance standards and regulations
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed
