Job Description

RTI’s Health Data Informatics program – part of the Division for Health Services and Social Policy Research – is seeking qualified candidates for a full-time Programmer/Analyst position based in Waltham MA or Research Triangle Park NC. RTI programmer/analysts work with preeminent scientists, statisticians and researchers at the forefront of health-related research.

Responsibilities

The incumbent will work with researchers to analyze and organize complex qualitative and quantitative clinical, financial and administrative data from multiple sources, and to synthesize results into meaningful reports. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Constructing analytic datasets using primarily SAS, and producing output – reports, tables and figures – driven by project-specific needs
• Designing and implementing programs for analysis, statistical modeling, and quality control using SAS and other statistical packages and programming tools
• Providing database support and maintenance
• Supporting analysts in all phases of the software development life cycle
• Documenting steps taken and proofing/crosschecking results
• Assisting in the preparation of analytic results in the form of client reports, journal manuscripts, and abstracts/posters for professional meetings

Qualifications

• BS/BA in a mathematical, data-oriented, or computing specialty is required with a minimum of 10 years of programming experience
• 5 years of SAS programming experience in a research environment is required
• Strong SAS data step skills are required
• Strong skills in using descriptive statistical procedures are advantageous; experience with PROC REG, PROC GLM, PROC LOGISTIC, SAS ODS, PROC SQL, PROC REPORT, PROC TABULATE and other reporting tools, are highly desirable
• Unix/Linux or z/OS platform experience is required
• Extensive experience working with design and maintenance of complex relational databases (such as DB2 or Oracle) is highly desirable
• Extensive experience working with health-related data, which can include Medicare or Medicaid data, complex surveys like the Health Outcome Survey, Medical Expenditure Panel Survey, or Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey for example, is highly desirable
• PC proficiency is a must
• Strong written and oral English-language skills, the ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced multitasking environment, the ability to work independently and as part of a team are required
• Exceptional judgment and discretion in working with confidential data is necessary
• Experience with performance issues of very large datasets processing and complex data manipulation, is highly desirable
• Familiarity with STATA or other statistical tool(s) are desirable
• Advanced knowledge of MS Access and Excel is advantageous
