Job Summary :

Provides computer related system services for a broad and diverse variety of University supported operating systems, operating systems software, and utility programs.

Departmental Focus:

Provides Unix, Linux and VMware system administration as a senior member of the infrastructure services team responsible for Yale University’s virtualization, web, email and other critical Unix/Linux servers in a dynamic, 24/7/365 production environment.

The technical environment at Yale includes 200+ servers running VMware, Redhat Linux, Apache, JBoss, Drupal, Wordpress, MySQL, F5, Nagios/Opsview, Cfengine and Jenkins, with a focus on automation, scalability, high-availability, and architecture.

Principal Responsibilities :

  1. Provides technical expertise in critical and complex areas. Contributes to department planning and long range technical development. Acts as a project manager to provide support for major assignments.
  2. Advises stakeholders and users of solutions to operating system problems. Researches, designs, develops, tests, and implements complex software systems. Designs modifications to already existing systems.
  3. Authorizes system upgrades and software installations.
  4. Identifies, designs, develops and implements new system tools.
  5. Performs complex and unusual problem solving.
  6. Ensures that systems are operating at an optimum level with software appropriate to business needs.
  7. Determines specifications needed to tailor an operating system to meet business needs.
  8. Develops and provides training programs.
  9. Recommends, researches and implements new technologies, processes, and methodologies.

Required Education and Experience :

Bachelor's degree.
Six years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Skills and Abilities:

  1. Extensive ability with UNIX / Linux operating systems and utilities, tools and applications used to install, configure, document and maintain systems and applications.
  2. Proven ability in a production environment with at least two of the following automated install, automated build and deployment, automated configuration management, enterprise monitoring systems, server virtualization, load balancing, web servers, Java application servers.
  3. Excellent communication skills in order to collaborate as a knowledge leader in the specification, design and deployment support of UNIX infrastructure. Demonstrated ability to develop and document complex procedures.
  4. Proven ability supporting UNIX web, email or application servers.
  5. Ability with administrative scripting languages.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Bachelor's degree plus six years experience supporting production UNIX / Linux systems in a 24/7/365 environment.
