SENIOR MECHANICAL ENGINEER NORTH EAST £45K (closed)
My client is a world-leading wave energy company which is developing its wave energy device to produce clean, sustainable energy from ocean waves. The company has a skilled team of over 60 staff, all working to make wave energy a mainstream form of renewable electricity. They already successfully installed two full-scale devices and is working with partners in Scotland, Ireland and the USA to develop the first commercial wave farms around the world. This is one of the few wave energy technologies which has moved off the drawing board into full-scale power production.
The Senior Mechanical Engineer will work within the Engineering Department, developing the design of future generations of the wave power technology. Reporting to the Lead Engineer, the Senior Mechanical Engineer will have responsibility for the design of sub-systems, and knowledge and experience of the technologies required to install, operate and maintain in a cost effective manner.
Key Responsibilities
Working within a multi-disciplined department the Senior Mechanical Engineer will be required to respond to a wide variety of technical challenges that will require an innovative approach. The successful candidate will be responsible for the following:
• Develop concept design solutions, working both with internal colleagues and managing external consultants and suppliers, to ensure design is fit for purpose
• Create solutions that maximise availability and increase product design life
• Reduce manufacture, fabrication and installation costs through effective design strategies
• Create specifications for component procurement and sub-system detailed design
• Manage the testing of components and sub-systems
• Assess and apply operational data and knowledge to improve functionality and performance of future designs
• Follow a quality led design process while being flexible in response to rapidly evolving technology
• Embody our safety ethos in our design and working practices, and within consultants, suppliers and sub-contractors
The Senior Mechanical Engineer will have the following knowledge and experience:
• Degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering or a related subject
• Chartered, or near completion of chartered status, with IMechE or similar body
• Significant post graduation experience in the design of marine based mechanical systems
• Experience in the design and operation of drive trains and rotating machinery
• Proven ability to apply engineering skills through the life of a system, from conceptual design through to procurement, installation, commissioning and operation
• IT skills: 3D CAD (preferably SolidWorks), FE analysis, MS Office (including Excel)
