Position Description

The role of the GOSM Web Application Developer is to provide business partners with intranet, Internet, or extranet-enabled applications. These applications fall into the broad categories of order management and product  content  management  systems.   This  role  assures  the  web  applications  meets  user requirements, objectives, standards, security, and legal requirements

•The primary focus of this role is designing, building and maintaining a variety of web-based applications.  This includes developing/recommending alternatives for new designs and proposing change to existing applications or processes.  The applications are primarily IIS, .net, .asp, and Object Oriented javascript based but may also be built on other common web technologies.
•Create new applications based on approved designs
•Modify existing programs to correct bugs or enhance functionally
•Integrate custom developed applications with 3rd party packages
•Configure application servers, databases, and 3rd party packages
•Develop unit test plans and perform unit testing on all code changes
•Participate in function, integration, regression, and acceptance testing by working with the appropriate resources
•Diagnosing production issues and assess scope, impact, and importance of issues
•Mapping technical specifications to language specific class/method structures
•Understanding and/or developing relational database resources to support the application
•Conducts task estimation for input to project planning
•Maintain all necessary technical documentation, such as process flows, system architecture
•Maintain detailed documentation at the code and application levels
•Reviewing proposed approach with other technical staff at Grainger as appropriate
•Correcting issues in a timely manner depending on scope and impact
•Communicating the impact and resolution of issues to appropriate personnel
•Understanding the business needs driving new functionally
•Communicates project status to project team, business partners and managers
•Develops a strong working knowledge of web tools, services and industry trends by conducting specified secondary research to determine practical implementation of emerging technologies through prototyping, benchmarking and working with consultants and vendors

 

 

Position Requirements

•Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, related area or relevant experience
•Experience in all phases of structured development life cycle (SDLC).
•Experience with HTML, Javascript, Object Oriented Javascript, XML, XSLT, .net, LINK, and JSON
•7- 10 years experience developing web-based applications using NT/IIS/ASP and related Microsoft technologies.
•Familiarity with Subersion or other version control software
•Understanding of and/or experience with one or more development process methodologies
•Extensive business and/or system analysis skills that support applications development.
•Strong analytical, problem-solving, and conceptual skills.
•Experience developing applications that utilize JSON
•Experience working with search engine technology (such as AltaVista)
•Experience developing graphical content of applications a big plus
•Exposure to a source code management package
•Demonstrated strong communication skills
•The job requires minimal travel; typically two or three times a year for a week or less.
•The GOSM Web Developer may work remotely from a home office and/or may work in a Grainger location.
•The GOSM Web Developer reports to the GOSM Sr. Project Manager.  The responsibilities of this role will require interaction with a significant number of internal resources.  In addition, there will be interaction with external resources such as consulting partners.

•The GOSM Web Developer will participate in the design, development and maintenance of Grainger Safety Services web-based applications, such as Online Safety Manager.  These applications are the primary means by which Grainger offers web-based services to our safety customer base.
•This role will have a direct impact on Grainger Safety Services ability to deliver effective application systems to the customer, achieve consistent high levels of customer service and enable future growth.
•The GOSM Web Developer does not have budgetary responsibility.
