Technical Skills Description:
Strong AIX skills, but needs to be comfortable with WINOS, Solaris and Linux
Exposure to application testing tools such as: Loadtesting, Application profiling and Application modeling.
Exposure to Websphere and MQ
Strong DB background
Strong Java background
Great analytical skills
Skilled on VMware and or virtualization within AIX
San monitoring and analysis skills a plus
Typically we haveve looked towards admins to fill this role, but a senior developer may be able to move into this type of role.
Duties:
Provides senior level technical consultation for new technology for Information Technology Services. Serves primary role representing on System projects/studies focused on implementation, planning, development, and coordination of strategic technological directives as they pertain to performance.
Studies and assesses merit and impact of new technologies for IT and System as they pertain to performance.
Identifies and advocates changes in IT/System automation, communications, operations, and security environments/technologies. Identifies and communicates opportunities to improve and increase reliability, efficiency, performance, and service. Identifies and communicate opportunities to reduce and contain cost/overhead.
Maintains state-of-the-art knowledge of information technology (IT) products and trends surveying options to position IT to meet rapidly expanding and diverse business needs of the System. Keeps abreast of and monitors (IT) industry advances by attending conferences, seminars, and classes, studying industry publications, and participating in professional associations.
Informs various levels of IT/System management of pending industry advances' impact on System IS environment as they pertain to performance. Makes pivotal recommendations for changes in support of technological advancements through analysis and written proposals.
Provides senior-level technical guidance, motivation, and supervision to others assigned to projects and studies to accomplish project goals and make sound recommendations for changes in support of technological advancements and development.
Education & Experience:
Doctorate, Masters, and or Undergraduate degree in Mathematics, Computer Science or Information Technology or an equivalent combination of education and job-related work experience equal to 11+ years.
Additional Knowledge & Skills:
Working knowledge of performance monitoring and tuning properties and principles; working knowledge of performance monitoring tools (i.e., SAR, PERFMON, BEST/1, BMC Patrol, BMC Perform and Predict, etc.) and system utilities (i.e., Jprobe, Introscope, native command, and Scripts) to investigate routine system/subsystem performance problems. The ability to recommend new measurement tools, and document impacts to IT system/subsystems from workload cutovers and/or hardware/software upgrades. Must be able to demonstrate success with positive results.

Ability to identify/analyze root causes and contribute to problem resolution efforts. Basic knowledge of Unix (i.e., Sun/Solaris, Linux and AIX , etc) and Windows operating system, servers, peripheral hardware technology, and relationship with other platforms, mainframe and network to measure and tune performance of FRIT's automated system/subsystems. Basic knowledge of languages (SAS, VBA, Perl, C, C++, C#, Visual Basic) to use in adhoc analysis exercises. Basic knowledge of statistics.
Good organizational, analytical, verbal and written communication skills to participate in performance studies and to provide good communications about the status of issues. Excellent personal computer and related software skills to download data from distributed systems and prepare spreadsheet and graphic illustration documents for management as well as knowledge of Microsoft tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access required).
Must be able to assist in major projects and to run projects.
Good organizational skills as well as pattern recognitions skills to stay organized and oriented when working on problems or dealing with day to day issues.
Other Requirements:
Travel, Oncall and Call Back occurs Frequently approximately 21% to 50% of the time to provide coverage to resolve major/complex technical problems, ensure timely completion of special projects, meet deadlines, application cutovers, infrastructure cutover and testing, problem determination, training, customer meetings, district cutovers, hardware/software upgrades, and contingency tests.
Required to carry a cell phone or pager. Call backs occur approximately 4 days per month (20%) due to system performance problems. Oncall support on average is 7 days of primary coverage and 7 days of secondary coverage in a 2 month period.
Overnight travel averages 2 - 5 night per month to provide coverage to resolve major/complex technical problems, ensure timely completion of special projects, meet deadlines, application cutovers, infrastructure cutover and testing, problem determination, training, customer meetings, district cutovers, hardware/software upgrades, and contingency tests.
