Job Description

SCOPE OF POSITION:

Perform all immunohematology procedures to ensure safe and timely transfusion. Knowledge of current transfusion practices and regulations. Responsible for accurate performance of all immunology procedures on patient samples. Knowledge of reportable diseases, their requirements and need for confirmatory testing. Responsible for the proper care and treatment of the patient population which includes neonate, infant, child, adolescent, adult and older adult. Reports to Blood Bank Team Leader and Laboratory Coordinator.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Evaluate all serological results as to their validity, for the patient population served including neonate, infant, and child, adolescent, adult and older adult; resolving any discrepancy before release of blood component for transfusion.
  • Have knowledge of and adhere to current policies and transfusion practices. Have knowledge of and follow current FDA, AABB, JCAHO, State and CAP guidelines. Be familiar with Donor criteria.
  • Perform all immunology procedures as defined in the section procedure manual for the patient population served including neonate, infant, and child, adolescent, adult and older adult.
  • Know and follow all Quality Assurance procedures as stated in procedure manuals and Quality Plan.
  • Prepare and distribute all blood components properly for the patient population served including neonate, infant, and child, adolescent, adult and older adult.
  • Keep current on advances in Laboratory Services. Participate in and share continuing education to maintain professional development and competency for the patient population served including neonate, infant, child, adolescent, adult and older adult patients.
  • Promote effective working relationships and work effectively as a part of the department team to facilitate the department�s ability to meet its goals and objectives.
  • Communicates in a courteous and professional manner with co-workers, Team Leaders, management, physicians, other healthcare providers and patients. Relay information to appropriate individuals concerning patients, blood supply, equipment, reports, etc. according to established policies.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

  

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must have basic computer skills and ability to access internet and other programs applicable to Hospital procedures.
  • Perform automated functions that fall within job responsibility.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Ability to adapt in a dynamic environment including exposure to all patient elements, i.e., blood-borne pathogens, physical requirements: lifting and carrying of supplies, standing, walking and bending.
  • Ability to interact with internal as well as external customers with tact and confidentiality.
  • Ability to approach clinical responsibilities for patient care with regard to the laboratory's vision, i.e. by providing high quality, cost effective and timely diagnostic/therapeutic services through the effective utilization of human resources and state-of-the-art technologies.
  • MT (ASCP), NCA, HEW certification or comparable certification
  • BA or BS degree with at least one year on the job training supervised.
