The role of the Subsurface Technologist is to provide technical support to the large team of subsurface professionals, with responsibilities including data management, data loading, mapping, IT and software management, IT troubleshooting and general office support.


Roles and Responsibilities

General subsurface support:

  • Support large integrated technical department comprising of geologists, geophysicists, reservoir engineers, petroleum engineers, production technologists and well engineers
  • Develop and establish systems and processes within the department for technical data management
  • Data loading ? loading of all types of subsurface digital data into software such as Petrel, Kingdom suite, petrophysical applications, Eclipse, OFM, MBAL, GAP, PipeSim, Compass etc
  • Data manipulation ? assist G&G and engineering colleagues in preparing data for analysis or import into software packages
  • Preparation of 2D maps in Petrel or ArcGIS
  • Assist in preparation of technical reports, presentations and documents

Technical Data Management:

  • Organisation and management of department databases
  • Management of data transfer (internal and external to Petrofac)
  • Preparation of data packages for external digitising and analysis with associate organisations and service providers.
  • Liaison across Petrofac businesses globally regarding data transfer
  • Develop data management best-practices and share with subsurface teams across other IES organisations globally

IT Management:

  • Manage interface between IES Technical Centre and Petrofac IT
  • Manage departmental hardware and software requirements and organise implementation in conjunction with Petrofac IT;
  • Manage subsurface software procurement and licencing

Technical Skills and Competencies (Essential)

  • 5+ years in subsurface technologist-style role in an Operator or Service company
  • High level of numerical competency
  • High level of competence in written and spoken English
  • Strong demonstrable capability in general Windows-based and MS Office tools, particularly Excel
  • Proven track record of data manipulation and processing
  • Proven track record of data loading/export into a variety of subsurface software packages
  • Proven track record of loading/export SEG-Y seismic data
  • Aptitude, willingness and ability to learn and manipulate new software
  • Proactive problem solver, un-phased by challenging situations
  • Relishes challenge of solving and finding solutions to new problems and learning from these
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary integrated team environment
  • Desire to share knowledge and experience within the team and across the Company

Highly Advantageous:

  • 10+ years in subsurface technologist-style role in an Operator or Service company
  • Oil company experience, particularly in an Operating environment
  • Experience of basic data analysis and interpretation
  • Experience of loading data into Petrel, Kingdom Suite, RMS, Eclipse, OFM, IP, Techlog, Logic, Compass
  • Experience of data manipulation and output from production databases
  • Advanced Excel skills
  • Experience of 2D mapping using Petrel and ArcGIS
