Job Description

Position Title: Business Analyst

Location: Toronto, Ontario

Reporting to the Manager, Business Applications, the incumbent will be a key member of the Project Management office, acting as the lead in planning, gathering and documenting IT business requirements with stakeholders at all levels of the organization, for enterprise level applications.
The incumbent will require a solid knowledge of software development and implementation lifecycles and of the IIBA Business Analysis Body of Knowledge (BABOK) implementing best practices and standards relating to requirements management. He/she will also play a key role in the maintenance and analysis of our enterprise architecture, documentation and improvement of key business processes and workflows, development of business cases and proposals, RFI/RFP development, solution assessments and selection.

Key Areas of Responsibility and Duties:

Business Requirements Management

Business Analysis Planning and Monitoring

Define IT best practices, standards and guidelines for business requirements management.

Work with the PMO office to select and implement a business requirements management system (ex: IBM Rational ReqPro).

Provide leadership, guidance and mentoring to other team members, conduct peer and overall business analysis performance reviews.

Develop and maintain strong relationships with top level management and work closely with the Business Application Manager to identify new or potential IT initiatives across the organization, their sponsors and key stakeholders.

Meet with sponsors to define the business requirements management plan and schedule.

Work with developers, analysts and consultants during the development and/implementation phase to ensure requirements are being met, manage scope creep and present any change requests.

Lead the development of test cases and scripts.

Lead system testing and user acceptance testing for software development and implementation projects.

Stay current on the latest trends in Microsoft software development, SharePoint and mining applications.

Elicitation:
Meet with sponsors to define the business requirements management plan and schedule.

Lead stakeholder interviews, focus groups, brainstorming sessions, document analysis and other workshops to gather requirements.

Document existing business process workflows, data flows and models, business requirement document (BRDs) and use cases.

Conduct review sessions with business stakeholders to validate all documentation, understanding of the problem and the requirements.

Requirements Analysis:
Prioritize and organize requirements into logical groups and/phases.

Analyze as-is process workflows, identify areas for improvement and develop proposed to-be processes.

Identify any assumptions or constraints within the requirements.

Communication:
Obtain and maintain consensus among key stakeholders on the overall scope and requirements of initiatives.

Create and maintain relationships among requirements, deliverables.

Package and present requirements to sponsors, Business Application Manager and PMO office.

Enterprise Analysis:
Define and maintain overall organizational as well as regional and site/office enterprise architectures.

Assess capability gaps, identify relationships and dependencies between new initiatives/systems and existing ones.

Conduct build vs. buy analysis and determine best solution approach
Work with the business and the PMO office to develop business cases, SOWs, RFIs and RFPs

Solution Assessment and Validation
Work with the PMO office and business owners during to define evaluation criteria, review proposals and vendor selection process.

Review and evaluate solution to ensure expected benefits are being achieved.
Work with the business and PMO to develop corrective action plans as needed.


Technical Support and Development:
Work with development team and third party contractors/consultants to understand requirements.

Assist with configuration and development of Microsoft SharePoint, SQL Server 2008 Reporting Services, Integration Services and Analysis Services. Some development work may be included.

Provide level III support for enterprise level applications and assist IT Support in troubleshooting issues.

Travel required between 25 – 50%

Minimum Qualifications & Skill Requirements:
Post-secondary education in Computer Science, Business Analysis or related field.

Strong understanding of IIBA BABOK and business analysis tools and methodologies

Minimum 3 years’ experience in Information Technology Business Analysis.

Knowledge of emerging IT trends and technologies

Excellent analytical, attention to detail, problem solving and decision-making skills; verbal and written communication skills; interpersonal and negotiation skills

Experience in a few of the following areas:

Development of Internet/Intranet business strategies

Development of business intelligence strategies

Business process re-engineering and workflow automation

Business case development and cost-benefit analysis

Feasibility studies

JAD

Experience in structured methodologies for the identification of users requirements and the development of specifications

Experience in the use of case tools to document conceptual requirements and scope

Additional Qualifications & Skills:

Experience in mining and natural resource industry

CBAP certification would be considered a strong asset.

Fluent in French, Spanish, Russian or Portuguese would be considered a strong asset.

Experience with SharePoint 2007/2010, .NET ?3.0 development (ASP.NET, Silverlight, and Windows Workflow Foundation), SQL Server 2008 incl. SSIS, SSRS and SSAS.

BI and ETL development and implementation.
