Job Description

The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory operates as an international User Facility enabling research in many scientific fields, using the unique capabilities of the LCLS x-ray source. The LCLS Engineering Department is charged with supporting the experimental facilities of LCLS and providing technical expertise for the user program.  Within the Engineering Department, scientists, engineers and technicians maintain and develop technical capabilities as well as sophisticated x-ray instrumentation including optics, diagnostics, manipulators, detectors, lasers, and vacuum systems. 

An LCLS Engineering Department Science and Engineering (S&E) Associate proactively assists LCLS facility users, scientists, engineers, and area managers in planning, preparation, and execution of complex technical activities in the course of building, installing, maintaining, and modifying complex scientific instrumentation.  They take primary responsibility for executing technical tasks, both by direct participation and by leading and coordinating the work of other resources.  The S&E Associate applies a broad range of design, fabrication, and problem solving skills to efficiently support the LCLS Instruments and their diverse experimental programs.

 

  

Qualifications: Must have a bachelor's degree in a technical subject, or an equivalent combination of coursework, training and experience performing duties similar to those listed above. Extensive technical experience with UHV systems, mechanical assembly, and manufacturing in scientific or industrial laboratory setting. Demonstrated ability to creatively and practically apply scientific and engineering concepts and tools in the design, fabrication, maintenance, and troubleshooting of technical systems. The S&E Associate must also be capable of working under limited supervision with a diverse team of scientists, engineers, and technical staff to realize complex instrumentation within strict safety and procedural guidelines. Experience supervising or overseeing and coordinating the work of technical resources is necessary. The successful candidate must also have excellent verbal and written communication skills, proficiency with 2D and 3D CAD, and possess a valid CA driver's license to drive vehicles on site.
Desired Skills: Practical knowledge of the operation, diagnostics, optics, and support hardware for high power laser systems. Familiarity with complex control systems, data acquisition tools, and analysis software.
