  • The medical technologist’s goal is to optimize patient care by achieving excellence in technical and interpersonal skills. Will perform routine and non-routine blood bank testing including ABORh typing, antibody screening, compatibility testing and transfusion reaction workups. Reference testing duties include antibody identification, absorptions, elutions and phenotyping. Component preparatory duties include irradiation of blood products, component washing, thawing and pooling of frozen product and red cell deglycerolization. Other tasks include quality control, inventory control and equipment maintenance. The medical technologist must demonstrate a high degree of testing accuracy and competency in laboratory techniques. Good problem solving, decision making and multitasking skills are required. Must be able to work well under stressful situations within a team setting and have excellent organizational and record keeping skills. Technologist may be cross trained to perform bone marrow / stem cell processing, inventory control, record keeping, cell counts and issue of harvests for transplant. Will possess a level of knowledge typically acquired through a BA/BS degree in Medical Technology including a year internship in a clinic laboratory. Position requires a current Medical Technologist/ Medical Laboratory Technician registration (ASCP, HEW, CLS, MLT or equivalent). A minimum of 3 years experience in a blood bank is preferred.
