Job Description

This role description is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties, responsibilities or qualifications associated with the job. As team work and working with others is absolutely critical to our success as an individual and a business, it is inferred in each and every role. 


Position Purpose

The Engineer 2, Mechanical, reports to the Engineering Leader and is responsible for the performance of routine functions which require the application of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria in carrying out a sequence of related engineering tasks.  This position requires a moderate to high level of supervision; most work is still reviewed by a more senior engineer.  In addition, this level may participate in project-specific relationship building with Customers, Suppliers, individuals or organizations.


Essential Functions

  • Works assigned tasks to meet schedule and may coordinate details with other departments.
  • Recognizes problems which are beyond capabilities and is learning from the experts in the area.
  • May implement process improvements on a project level.
  • Performs work which involves the use of conventional engineering practices.
  • Investigates products and documents findings in report format.
  • Analyzes simple components without supervision.  Hydraulic, stress and control theory analysis is typically performed.
  • Writes and performs component tests with some supervision.
  • Dispositions hardware with supervision.


Other Functions

At some international locations, may perform the following functions:

  • Generates, discusses and maintains components design proposals with internal departments balancing need to customer specification with manufacturing/cost implications.
  • Creates detail designs using 2D and 3D drafting including dimensioning and tolerancing. 
  • Documents/archives/retrieves drawings from storage system.
  • Creates and maintains BOMs; releases drawings.


Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills including presentations (internal only); Basic technical writing skills (procedures, reports, etc.).
  • Competent skills in problem solving and trouble-shooting.
  • Competent in the use of PCs and associated software.
  • Basic knowledge of appropriate applications such as BOM, Item Master, NCR, EC screens and part tracking.
  • Ability to effectively operate in the project team environment and communicate with customers.  May direct or lead work of technicians, detailers and designers.
  • Basic ability to understand and interpret industry technical standards including quality system standards and PLC process.
  • Basic use and understanding of FEA tools, basic use of DFSS tools and methodologies; Basic knowledge of Engineering quality systems (PLC, engineering change, configuration management). Assists with the development of department and organization procedures.
  • Basic understanding of component function and testing.  Learning manufacturing processes, drawings and geometric dimensioning and tolerances as well as shop standards and procedures.
  • Effective time management skills.


Education or Formal Training

Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering required.


Experience Required

Greater than 1 year in related field or entry level Masters of Science degree required.
