Job Description

SQL Database Administrator

This position is responsible for all daily maintenance, monitoring, performance analysis, trouble shooting, problem resolution, backup/recovery, and user assistance required of Microsoft databases in a high availability environment. Specifically, the area of user assistance will involve providing guidance, best practices, and assistance in any area of the entire application infrastructure associated with or to the databases managed. The selected DBA will be required and expected to provide high level database technology input into new and existing projects. 

The successful candidate must not only be knowledgeable of database and computer architecture and technology, but is also responsible for the other "soft skills" required to be a successful DBA and team member. Examples of these soft skills include verbal and written communication at the level appropriate for the audience, management of his/her time, and management of the project milestones for which he is responsible.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


* Performance and tuning analysis: Works closely with operations staff to ensure stable performance of the MS SQL environments, performs performance monitoring/analysis, identifies and resolves bottlenecks.

* Capacity planning: Provides business applications with enough resources for their short-term and long-term growth.

* Systems/Application support: Ensures that MS SQL databases are maintained at the highest level of support. Ensures that client/server applications run successfully and are optimally tuned to maximize use of system resources while minimizing client impact.

* Problem resolution: Resolves problems and answers questions related to MS SQL. Contacts vendor support when necessary. Facilitates application development and client problem resolution with optimum speed and efficiency.

* Installs and upgrades RDBMS and related products: Keeps databases at current release and maintenance levels. Installs supporting products.

* Participates in defining and implementing data security.

* Reorganize database structures as needed: Uses tools to reorganize or de-fragment database table spaces, tables and indexes. Provides an efficient database environment to maximize productivity and improve user performance.

* Perform application refreshes on request: Refresh data from one environment to another at the request of the application development staff.

* Converts logical database designs into physical databases.

* Creates and maintains database schemas and subset schemas. 

* Generates test and production databases.

* Develops transaction log and backup/recovery facilities to maximize recoverability and reduce human intervention and margin of error.

* Participates in defining and implementing data security.

* Serves as primary customer interface with vendors for database issues.

* Serve as a national resource to the regions to aid and support other installations located in remote offices as needed. 

* Perform ad-hoc queries and reports as necessary.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

* Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or related discipline is required. 

* Minimum of 8 to 10 years of experience, with five (5) years of in-depth MS database design, support and administration experience in a practical production environment are required. 

* MCITP Database Admin is a major plus. 

* Effective oral, written and interpersonal communication skills required.
