Job Description

JOB POSTING:         Packaging Engineer

DEPARTMENT:       Technical Package Development

REPORTING TO:     Michael Zazzeri (Manager, Packaging Development)

 

The Packaging Engineer will support the successful introduction of saleable and promotional initiatives by ensuring their design corresponds with plant machinery and procedures, maintaining the quality of the product for the consumer.  Will support existing business through package revisions, defect analysis and cost improvement projects.  Facilitate launch activities and priorities by working with PCD in the conception phase of NPD. Collaborate with PCD teams during the conception and evaluation phases of the new projects and participate in supplier selection.  Collaborate with internal departments and/or suppliers to determine feasibility of new packaging related to functionality, compatibility and quality.  Participate in the launch definition via the official kick-off meeting with PCD and Plant Operations’ teams.  Adhere to the package definition with final specifications, drawings, and component testing.  Ensure launch quality and design integrity, on time, and within agreed upon cost objectives.  Continually optimize current products and processes.  Oversee final approvals provided for each new launch component following test methods and protocols.  Investigate alternative package designs to reduce costs and increase line efficiency.  Seek new ideas and innovation from strategic suppliers for Coty’s exclusive use.  Resolve component and specification issues.   Travel to component vendors, outside contractors, Coty global offices and other sites as needed.   Manage new and ongoing projects to guarantee compliance and adherence to cGMP guidelines.  Collect and evaluate data for packaging sustainability and value added projects.  Collaborate with R&D, Package Concept Development, Marketing, Procurement, Manufacturing

 

Requires:   A degree in Package Engineering or Equivalent.  Minimum 3 years in Package Development or equivalent position.  Working knowledge of a wide variety of manufacturing processes in cGMP environments plus 3+ years experience in cosmetics/pharmaceutical/consumer packaged goods company.  Broad range of technical skills including experience in all phases of product/technology development from concept to commercialization.  Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills along with strong project management, problem solving, data analysis and presentation skills.  Must be proficient in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe, SPC, Visio, ETQ, Access, and other computer systems.  Excellent organizational skills to manage the documentation, materials and information load.  Ability to analyze components for fit, function and mechanical compatibility.   Detailed knowledge of packaging of cosmetics, toiletries or fragrance preferred.  Experience with industrialization processes, especially for new products. Experience in primary through tertiary packaging development for new product launches.  Coordination and completion of qualification programs for new package designs and materials.  Experience with QMS encompassing New Product Introduction processes (e.g. Stage GATEs, technical readiness ).  Understanding of SPC and DOE is preferred.  Lean Manufacturing or equivalent improvement process experience.  Knowledge of Lean tools (i.e Poka-Yoke / Mistake Proofing, Process Flow Diagrams, RCPS , Standard work, etc.); CAPE (palletization software), and CAD software(AutoCAD).  Technical expertise in components manufactured in Injection Molding and Decoration, Glass Blow Molding and Decoration or Metal Forming and Decoration.
